Phyllis Newman is an American actress and singer, known for her Tony Award-winning role as Martha Vail in the Broadway production of Subways Are for Sleeping (St. James Theatre). Other Broadway credits include her debut as Fay Fromkin/Sarah in Wish You Were Here and Claire DeLoone in On the Town (Imperial Theatre); Blanche in Broadway Bound (Broadhurst Theatre); Bessie Berger in Awake and Sing! (Circle in the Square Theatre); Edna Edison in The Prisoner of Second Avenue (Eugene O’Neill Theatre); Eve/Princess Barbara/Ella/Passionaella in The Apple Tree (Shubert Theatre); Sylvie in Moonbirds (Cort Theatre); Jane Bennett in First Impressions (Alvin Theatre); Ella Peterson in Bells are Ringing (Shubert/Alvin Theatres); and her one-woman show, The Madwoman of Central Park West (22 Steps).
