James Whitmore

James Whitmore was an American film, theatre, and television actor. He is best known for The Shawshank Redemption, Planet of the Apes, The Asphalt Jungle, and Them! Other film credits include The Majestic, Where the Red Fern Grows, High Crime, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Eddy Duchin Story, Oklahoma!, Kiss Me Kate, Above and Beyond, The Red Badge of Courage, Angels in the Outfield, Mrs. O’Malley and Mr. Malone, Battleground, and Give ‘em Hell, Harry!

Broadway credits include his Tony Award-winning debut role as Tech Sergeant Harold Evans in Command Decision (Fulton Theatre); the Colonel in Almost an Eagle (Longacre Theatre); Theodore Roosevelt in Bully (46th Street Theatre); Will Rogers in Will Rogers’ USA (Helen Hayes Theatre); Emanuel Bloch in Inquest (Music Box Theatre); and Tom Willard in Winesburg, Ohio (National Theatre).

Off-Broadway theatre credits include the Old Man in About Time (John Houseman Theatre) and Don in Elba (N.Y.C. Center Stage).
