Ernest J. Gaines is an African-American author whose works have been taught in college classrooms and translated into many languages, including French, Spanish, German, Russian, and Chinese. Four of his works have been made into television movies.

Novels include Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, Bloodline, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, A Long Day in November, In My Father's House, A Gathering of Old Men, Mozart and Leadbelly: Stories and Essays, and his National Book Critics Award-winning A Lesson Before Dying.

Short stories include "The Turtles", "Boy in the Double-Breasted Suit", "Mary Louis", "Just Like a Tree", "The Sky Is Gray", "A Long Day in November", and "My Grandpa and the Haint".
