Matthew Lopez

Matthew Lopez is an author and playwright, best known for his first play, The Whipping Man, which made its world premiere in New Jersey, with subsequent productions in California and Massachusetts before debuting Off-Broadway (Luna Stage Company/Old Globe Theatre/Barrington Stage/Manhattan Theatre Club). Under the direction of Doug Hughes, the Off-Broadway production garnered OBIE, Lucille Lortel, and John Gassner New Play Awards for its production under the direction of Doug Hughes. 

Other plays include Somewhere, a dance-filled piece about a Puerto Rican family in 1959 (Old Globe Theatre/TheatreWorks/Hartford Stage); Reverberation, a keenly felt, haunting drama about two New Yorkers adrift in their lives who strike up a sustaining friendship (Hartford Stage); The Legend of Georgia McBride, premiering in Colorado before debuting Off-Broadway (Denver Theatre/MCC Theatre); and The Sentinels, premiering in London (Headlong Theatre). 

Lopez also wrote for HBO’s The Newsroom, and adapted Javier Marias’ trilogy, Your Face Tomorrow, for film.
