All this month, L.A. Theatre Works and the California Arts Council celebrate
the history, culture, and the people of California.

Each show will be broadcast on our affiliate radio stations in California and around the country. Visit our radio page to find a station near

Chavez Ravine
by Culture Clash

Directed by Lisa Peterson and starring Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas, Herbert Siguenza, Zilah Mendoza. LATW kicks off California Month, a celebration of the Golden State’s vibrant history, with the story of the immigrant community that once existed on the site of what is now Dodger Stadium. Includes a new interview with Culture Clash founder Herbert Siguenza and a special feature on the history of the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles.

Mizlansky/Zilinksy
by Jon Robin Baitz

Directed by Ron West and starring Nathan Lane, Rob Morrow, Harry Shearer, Julie Kavner. California Month continues with a comedic look at the seamy side of Hollywood, as shady producer Davis Mizlansky tries to cook up one last scam involving a cut-rate Bible audiobook to keep the IRS at bay. Includes a new interview with screenwriter and playwright David Rambo about the real-life dark side of the entertainment business.

Zoot Suit
by Luis Valdez

Written and directed by Luis Valdez and starring Marco Rodriguez, Kinan Valdez, Alma Martinez. Luis Valdez masterfully uses the Sleepy Lagoon murder case to examine the Chicano Zoot Suit Culture of the 40’s. Passionate and provocative, Zoot Suit pulses with the beat of big band music and traditional Latin songs. Includes a new interview about Zoot Suit and California’s immigration history with actor and educator Alma Martinez.

NOV 26
The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck, adapted by Frank Galati

Directed by Richard Masur and starring Jeffrey Donovan, Shirley Knight. California Month concludes with The Grapes of Wrath, the powerful story of the Joad family’s trek from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma to the promise of a new life in California.  Includes a new interview about Steinbeck’s California with educator Andrew
Chater of USC.
